The human body has been a central subject of investigation in my art practice for 30 years. I have drawn, cut out, modeled and abstracted images of the body. In the last decade I have become interested in the inside as well as the outside of the human image, and how they relate to each other.
I currently construct forms to represent the body in a non literal, disrupted order. The brain, bones, heart, other organs, heads or faces, legs, arms, torsos are all part of the “stack” which represents the human conditions. I work in sections. The works are hybrids. I am interested in beauty and aesthetic issues. I aim for balance, clarity, simplicity and elegance. The life height columns allow the viewer to relate to the work as of human scale or “life size.” (I depend on metal poles for stability of the arranged components.) The smaller pieces are more intimate and can be touched. One recent series also includes organic forms and embellished motifs. I have also always been interested in pattern and geometry, which are seen in the tile benches of 2003 and earlier work.
