The theme of my sculptures and wall pieces is often connected with houses as a metaphor of a human being. Ruins, chambers, rooms, doorways, silent walls, corners and chairs are some of the symbols and indicators I am using to express my ideas. I am working with the very basic geometric sculptural forms by cutting off from a solid lump of clay. In my wall pieces I am dividing the surface into smaller areas and units. That method enables me to build large surfaces. The clay fits together in rhythm like a puzzle. Another important theme is a landscape. It reflects a certain state of mind. In 2005 I made the first sculptures from the series `Talking Landscape`. Here in China the impressive, open sceneries made me continue with these images in porcelain. I am working with shades of black, white or stone which interact with light. Works in tiles and brick are an integral part of my output. In 2004 I finished an ensemble of brick and tile works for the residential area of Arabianranta in Helsinki. In these bricks I combine text from everyday dialogue with the artwork in a conceptual way. |
