My first days at FLICAM. June 2008. First I want to thank the FLICAM staff for the warm welcome we received when we arrived at Fuping. I think it’s amazing to see how the whole pottery art village is growing into a beautiful and international important museum for ceramic art. The artists that worked here before has done there very best to show a very interesting variety of art and craftmanship, and I hope we will be able to add something new and interesting to the museums as well. My first working days have been lovely, the working environment is very good and the studiostaff and translators do there utter best to help and support me with the creation and possible technical difficulties. Last but not least thanks for the hospitality and friendly staff at the hotel.

I work on (monumental) three-dimensional ceramic objects, oil paintings, illustrations for magazines and books. I’m fascinated by a broad range of historic visual cultural artifacts ranging from Mexican “day of the Dead” traditions to antique magazine illustrations and 19th century Catholic funeral memorial cards. I combine these interests with my love of painting, both Dutch and globally, as well as ceramic traditions to produce works that at once reflect the antique and the contemporary. I have a great fascination for contrasts, cloyingly sweet fairy tale figures transform into what they are: sideshow freaks, the extras in the illusion, the creeps from the cellar. Contemporary cartoon icons and imaginary heroes encounter one another in the mysterious world of, what I call my own ‘Cirque de Pepin’ (Pepijn’s circus). |
