It must have been 45 years ago I had my first encounter with Chinese culture: a coin alien and mysterious due to a square opening in the middle. As a reference to this memory I decided to use the contours of that coin for the piece in this exhibition, This piece “Sundial” exist of 48 elements, most of them made of 3 parts. The bottom part represents the natural force of growths, the middle part represents a cloud and the parts on top are forms that drew my attention during my stay in China. Forms I have seen on streets, hotel rooms and dinner tables, simultaneously familiar and alien. One of many spots of sun light present in the museum has become part of the piece. At the longest day of the year at the highest point of the sun this spot will be exactly positioned in the middle of the piece. At that day during regular intervals 6 of the elements will be specifically illuminated by the sun. |
