When I first began work at the Fuping Ceramic Studios I created two groupings of "Object Maker Series". Some of the forms were inspired by Chinese Pagodas, drinking vessels and farm tools for the fruit orchards. I then began work on "China Pearls (Beauty)" which came from many friends in the United States telling me, "When you are in China go to the Pearl Market in Beijing". Never in my life had I seen so many pearls! This sculpture consists of 40 clay pearls contained in a red wooden crate. The crate represents China's huge export economy. The photos surrounding the crate are of women wearing pearls and represent the strength and beauty of Chinese women. "Chinese Brooms (Beauty)" was my second work which was made because of my fascination with the brooms of China. Sweeping is typically considered women's work. For me the brooms were very beautiful because of their very basic quality. Sweeping is an everyday activity. Sweeping creates beauty. The photos are of women in Fu ping creating this beauty.
